Why Your Printer Says the Colors Are Wrong (RGB vs CMYK for AI Art)

You sent an AI-generated design off to print and the colors came back duller, darker, or just off from what you saw on screen. This isn't a printer malfunction. It's a color model mismatch, and it happens to almost every AI-generated file that hasn't been converted first.

Why screen colors and print colors don't match

Screens and printers build color in fundamentally different ways. Here's what's actually happening when your printed piece doesn't match what you designed.

AI only ever renders in RGB

Midjourney, DALL·E, and every other AI generator output RGB, the color model screens use to mix light. Printers build color with CMYK ink instead. Nothing converts between the two automatically.

RGB can show colors ink can't print

RGB has a wider range of colors than CMYK ink can physically reproduce, especially bright neons, deep blues, and vivid greens. Those colors don't disappear, they just shift to the closest color ink can actually make.

Printers auto-convert, inconsistently

If you don't convert the file yourself, your print vendor's software does it for you on the fly, using generic settings that vary by printer, paper stock, and shop. That's why the same file can come out differently at two different print shops.

Your screen isn't calibrated to ink

Even a properly converted CMYK file will look slightly different on your monitor than in print, because screens emit light and paper reflects it. A good conversion gets you close. Nothing gets you pixel-perfect.

How we get your colors print-accurate

A proper CMYK conversion isn't just a file format change. It takes a manual review to catch the colors that shift the most.

Send us the file

Upload your AI-generated design and let us know what it's being printed on: banners, packaging, apparel, business cards, whatever the end use is.

We convert and manually review it

We convert the file to CMYK and manually check the colors most likely to shift, adjusting them so the printed result matches your intent as closely as physically possible.

You get a print-accurate file

You'll receive a CMYK-ready file built to your printer's specs, along with a proof to approve before final payment.

Common questions

Can you convert any AI-generated image to CMYK?
Yes. We work with images from Midjourney, DALL·E, Adobe Firefly, Stable Diffusion, Canva AI, and others, regardless of the original format.
Will the printed colors match exactly what I see on screen?
As close as physically possible. Some RGB colors fall outside what CMYK ink can reproduce, so a proper conversion gets you the nearest accurate match, not an exact pixel-for-pixel one. That's a limitation of ink, not of the conversion.
